Mark Latham’s ‘hard-nosed’ plan to reduce domestic violence
Mark Latham says all jail sentences should be extended considering the majority of domestic violence offenders have committed other crimes.
An NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research report found about 64 per cent of domestic violence offenders were involved in other offences.
Domestic violence accounted for only 38 per cent of all the offences committed by DV offenders between 2008 and 2017.
Mr Latham tells Ben Fordham extending prison sentences would act as a deterrent.
“If you’re wanting a hard-nosed way of reducing the domestic violence rate in NSW you would say, ‘extend the jail terms for criminals in general’.
“That would mean that… they’d be separated from the community for longer periods of time, and almost certainly the rate of domestic violence would come down.”
