Will Winx retire? Chris Waller all but confirms the mighty mare’s future

Trainer Chris Waller has hinted his champion horse Winx will continue for one last hurrah next year.

The mighty mare won a fourth straight Cox Plate at Mooney Valley on Saturday, her 29th consecutive race win.

There has been speculation Winx might be retired after the race and move into the lucrative world of motherhood.

But, when asked how she pulled up, Chris Waller tells Alan Jones his horse is doing just fine.

“Most importantly the horse is well, so we live to fight another day.”

Alan informs listeners just how risky it can be to keep running such a valuable mare.

“The last thing you want is anything to happen to her, so you’ve got to be sure she’s up to the money,” says Alan.

Waller says Australia’s favourite horse will be sent for a spell with staff keeping a very close eye on her.

“We’re just making sure she’s still as good as the year before, or even six months.”

Alan also spoke with Winx co-owner Debbie Kepitis, Winx biographer Andrew Rule and racing journalist Ray Thomas.

Each shared their perspective on what could be the greatest racehorse the world has ever seen.
