A woman has been freed from her car after she crashed down an embankment and lost consciousness on the state’s South Coast.

The 67-year-old woman was travelling between Moruya and Wallaga Lake on Wednesday night when her SUV veered off the road and crashed down an embankment.

Her car overturned, landing in a creek and knocking her unconscious.

She only regained consciousness at 4.30pm on Thursday afternoon, 17 hours later.

She managed to raise the alarm with a relative but was unable to tell them where she was.

Emergency services launched a huge search operation and managed to pinpoint her location using a mobile phone system.

Within 20 minutes they had found the woman still trapped in her car, down an embankment on the Princes Highway at Kianga.

She was rescued and treated for suspected fractures and exposure.

She was airlifted to Canberra Hospital in a stable condition.
