Will plastic bags be outlawed?

Article image for Will plastic bags be outlawed?

Plastic bags could become a thing of the past, with states across the country legislating to ban them.

In NSW, the two major supermarkets are moving to remove single-use plastic bags without government regulation.

Director of the Australian Retailers Association, Russell Zimmerman, tells Chris Kenny we could see the bags banned within the next 12 months.

“Single-use plastic bags will be removed from supermarkets by the two major supermarkets. Over this next 12 months, you’ll see virtually no plastic bags coming into your supermarkets.”

Russell says this is just the beginning.

“We’re going to see heavier regulation. We’re going to see them looking at all plastic bags to be removed.

“The reason they’re doing it is because the Australian public don’t want plastic bags. ”
