The release of the recent State of the Environment report has painted a very grim picture of the threat to Australia’s natural landscape.

Charles Darwin University conservation expert Professor John Woinarski joined Jim Wilson on Drive with his analysis of what the report reveals.

“The whole fabric of our nature is in disrepair at the moment and it’s getting worse,” he said.

“Climate change is biting us now … bleaching of the barrier reef, these extraordinary fires of 2020, the floods, the fish kills in the Murray Darling. All of these things are manifestations of climate change.”

Professor Woinarsku also talked about the destruction of the environment by both invasive species and land clearing.

“The Koala is a classic example,” he said.

“Everyone would like to protect koalas, but the rate at which we’re clearing their habitat means that’s an almost impossible task.”

“Short term thinking is part of the problem here … we need long term strategies.”
