36-year-old marathon swimmer Chloe McCardel has successfully swam her 44th crossing of the English Channel, making her the new world record holder.

McCardel told Jim Wilson she’s “really content” after achieving her goal, making the crossing most likely her last.

Asked what motivates her to undertake so many 34km swims, she cited a “much deeper purpose” than her youthful competitiveness.

“My advocacy work, really supporting people who have gone through domestic violence, and advocating for change like criminalisation of coercive control.

“I feel that I’ve now got a deeper, more meaningful layer, and more meaningful messaging that I can have with … the media and speaking to the public.”
