The New South Wales State Emergency Service is encouraging everyone to wear orange on May 22 for Wear Orange Wednesday (WOW Day) in support of the volunteers.

The NSW SES is made up almost entirely of over 9,000 volunteers and assists in recuse efforts, particularly during national disasters.

They say anyone can wear an orange item and post a selfie to social media with the hashtag #ThankYouSES to show their appreciation.

NSW SES Kogarah Unit Deputy Local Commander Matt Kirby has been wearing orange every day for almost 17 years.

He tells Chris Smith they accept anyone willing to volunteer.

“We accept everyone from any walks of life.”
