Article image for ‘We get life, he gets home detention’: Victims slam sentence for Archbishop who protected paedophile priest

Victims have slammed the sentence handed to Adelaide Archbishop Philip Wilson who covered up abuse by a paedophile priest in the 1970s.

The 67-year-old senior Catholic figure has been sentenced to a maximum of 12 months jail, with a six-month non-parole period.

But he may not serve any time behind bars.

Magistrate Robert Stone said the Archbishop may be eligible for home detention and has adjourned the matter until August 14, with Wilson expected to be bailed in the meantime.

The sentence has sparked fury, with one victim telling Macquarie Media Court Reporter Gil Taylor, “We get life, he gets home detention. It’s disgusting”.

In May, Archbishop Wilson was found guilty of concealing the repeated sexual abuse of two altar boys by paedophile priest Jim Fletcher in the 1970s.

Wilson is the most senior Catholic cleric to be convicted of the offence.
