The smell of petrol has flowed down a Sydney street as rain continues to fall.

Surrounding streets near Captain Cook Drive in Kurnell were closed off as a result.

Fire and Rescue Superintendent Adam Dewberry told Ben Fordham that residual dry fuel particles from overflowing retention bases mixed in with floodwaters and caused the smell.

“I can assure there was no actual petrol or fuel released into the environment or into the community.”
