Have you ever wondered where your recyclables end up?

Around 620,000 tonnes of Australia’s recyclables are bought, processed and resold by China but that arrangement is about to change.

Beijing has announced it will no longer be accepting foreign waste, leaving Australia in the lurch.

CEO of the Waste Management Association of Australia, Gayle Sloan, tells Michael McLaren the waste industry isn’t prepared for the change.

“For a long time we’ve been saying we need to create jobs and manufacturing opportunities onshore and not rely on export markets offshore.”

She says Australia needs to move faster on the issue.

“We have companies onshore that can take paper out of your bins and making them into other paper and pizza boxes.

“The challenge is to be competitive.”
