Varroa Mite discovered near Coffs as pest moves north
Food growers are concerned that a varroa mite spread to bees throughout NSW will affect harvests and veggie prices.
The parasitic mite which was first detected in the Port of Newcastle is now being detected in the Central Coast and other NSW regions.
Now, beekeepers on the NSW Mid North Coast are the latest to prepare to destroy their hives after the detection of varroa mite in hives at a blueberry farm.
The deadly bee parasite has been detected in Nana Glen, 25 kilometres inland from Coffs Harbour, where a 10-km eradication zone has been established.
NSW Agriculture Minister Dugald Saunders told Jim Wilson Several new biosecurity zones have been established.
