US scientists achieve nuclear fusion breakthrough

Joe Hildebrand

There has been a major breakthrough by US scientists in the race to recreate nuclear fusion.

Scientists have got more energy out of a nuclear fusion reaction than they put in.

Nuclear fusion is the process that powers the Sun and other stars,  and is described as the “holy grail” of energy production.

Physicist at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California Dan Clark joined Joe Hildebrand to explain how it works.

Energy and Climate Change Program Director at the Grattan Institute Tony Wood also told Joe what effects this can have on energy sources in Australia.
