Australia’s eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant has officially sent legal threats to Twitter as part of a bid to better tackle the rise in online hate.

The action taken by the Australian eSafety Commissioner comes amid fears there’s a lack of transparency surrounding Twitter’s response to handling the rise in online hate.

Fines of up to $700,000 per day will be issued if Twitter doesn’t comply, according to Grant.

“We issued a formal legal notice last night,” Grant said.
