Treasurer’s firm message to states, COVID disaster payments to end
COVID disaster payments will be removed once locked down states hit 80 per cent vaccination rates.
The COVID disaster payment provides weekly payments of $450 for those who have lost fewer than 20 hours of work a week and $750 for those who have lost more.
Once a state or territory reaches 70 per cent full vaccination, people will have to reapply each week to confirm they can continue to receive the payment.
At 80 per cent, the payment will be reduced over two weeks.
Treasurer Josh Frydenberg told Ben Fordham it’s a key measure in learning to live with the virus.
“These are emergency payments and they’ll need to come to an end.
“As for lockdowns, we want to make them a thing of the past.”
