In NSW, we face harsher double demerit penalties, but does the strategy on long weekends work? We hear from both sides. 

Robert Bell from Highway Advocates argues against double demerits.

“The penalty might be enough for you to lose your license and people who drive for a living can’t afford that,” Robert told Chris O’Keefe.

Russell White from the Australian Road Safety Foundation argues for double demerits, saying that “harsher penalties are needed” to make people aware of the risks.

“If you don’t want to get the fine, don’t do the wrong thing,” said Russell.

Double demerits begin at midnight tonight.
