Retail workers abused every week

A new campaign is pleading for consumers not to attack retail workers this festive season.

The “No One Deserves a Serve” campaign follows revelations more than a third of retail workers felt threatened by customers at least once a year.

Gerard Dwyer, National Secretary for the Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees Association, tells Michael McLaren community members need to “lift their standards”.

“Verbal attacks are more common but workers also experience physical violence.

“Workers have had jam jars thrown at their heads and have even been held up with syringes.”

Mr Dwyer says the problem is not contained to Christmas time and occurs all year across every sector.

“We have this problem right across the year. The sustained abuse and the impact it has on our workers is our key concern.”
