Thousands of Australians getting ‘unnecessary’ hip replacements

Tens of thousands of Aussies are getting unnecessary knee and hip replacements according to a recent study.

The Move report says 25% of knee and hip replacements aren’t needed for people with osteoarthritis.

In 2016, nearly 100,000 Australians had joint replacements for osteoarthritis at a cost of more than $2 billion.

Ben Fordham speaks with Doctor Ross Walker, Macquarie Radio Network Health Expert.

“It’s not just the fault of the doctors.

“The reality is, one of the major causes of osteoarthritis is obesity and we’re seeing these growing rates of obesity.

“Many people would prefer to go through a hip replacement or a knee replacement than lose weight.”
