Alarming footage has gone viral of a man falling asleep in a self-driving Tesla.

Director at the QUT centre of robotics Professor Michael Milford has told Clinton Maynard these cars have to be supervised in order to be allowed to operate in Australia.

“You have to be vigilant and able to intervene at a moment’s notice,” he said.

But he says fully autonomous cars like those seen in Los Angeles could make their way to Sydney very soon.

“The fully autonomous vehicles obviously have and will require quite a bit of change to the regulations,” he added.
