Hero paramedic Darren Cauchi is proof our emergency services personnel are never really off-duty.

In May this year, the father-of-four and off-duty paramedic was driving home for dinner over the Mooney Mooney Bridge.

While crossing the bridge, Darren noticed a distressed woman crying and pacing back and forth.

He immediately knew something was wrong.

“Straight away my gut feeling was that something bad was about to happen,” Darren tells Ben Fordham.

Darren had phoned Triple Zero for backup but knew he had to do something and “there was no room for error”.

He grabbed the woman and fell backwards, saving her life.

But that’s not where Darren’s heroic actions end, with the story leaving Ben Fordham on the verge of tears.

“As I was talking to police, traffic was still moving at high speed,” Darren recalls.

“We just hear this almighty bang…”

Eight cars smashed into each other and he immediately jumped into action.

Darren saved multiple lives that afternoon and his heroic actions have won him a bravery award.
