‘This has backfired badly’: Trump impeachment will ‘fatally wound’ Democrats

Commentator Rita Panahi says the impeachment of US President Trump will backfire on the Democrats.

The US government’s House of Representatives has voted to impeach President Donald Trump on two charges concerning abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.

The decision makes Donald Trump the third President in US history to be impeached. He will now face trial in the Republican-controlled Senate, where he is highly likely to be acquitted.

Impeachment does not remove the President from office.

Rita Panahi tells Natalie Peters and Erin Molan she believes the impeachment will simply ruin the Democrats’ chances in the next election.

“This has backfired badly for the Democrats.

“What it has done is absolutely energise his base. It has shown the Democrats to be unprincipled, willing to impeach him on anything.

“It is going to fatally wound the best chance the Democrats have of beating Trump, and that’s Joe Biden’s campaign.”
