Chris Smith has weighed in on the end result of the abandoned rape case against former Liberal staffer Bruce Lehrmann.

Mr Lehrmann was accused of raping his former colleague Brittany Higgins inside Parliament House, a charge he categorically denies.

But the case has been abandoned and he no longer faces any charges.

Ms Higgins’ legal team have given notice that they will sue former Liberal ministers Linda Reynolds and Michaelia Cash as well as the Commonwealth for about $3 million.

“This was never a cut-and-dried case,” Chris said.

“It’s been a harrowing period for both parties now, it’s time to move on.”
