Socceroos legend Craig Foster has called on the football community to offer more support for LGBTQ+ players in the wake of Josh Cavallo’s coming out.

Last week the Adelaide United star became the world’s first openly gay football player.

Foster told Bill Woods and Mark Taylor male sport has been a “homophobic” and “hyper-masculine environment” for too long.

“The sport has to change … we can’t just say ‘Oh well done’, blah blah blah, ‘let’s move on’ and have one pride round.

“I would love to see all the fans, and even the A-League itself … make much of this season about a safe environment for gay male players.

“How are we going to change our own behaviour?”
