‘Crunch time’: Major coal plant closes in 48 hours
The Liddell power plant, which has been operating for more than 50 years, will close on Wednesday and the full impact of this is unknown.
It has previously supplied up to 10 per cent of NSW’s grid, but in recent times the figures have been closer to 5 per cent.
The station’s owner, the Australian Gas Light (AGL) company, says the Market Operator “has not approached us with concerns about reliability”.
The new Energy Minister, Penny Sharpe, also insists there will be no increase in household bills, but others aren’t so sure.
“The scoreboard doesn’t lie…It tells us we’re still getting 74% of our energy needs from coal,” said Ben Fordham.
“Don’t jump off the boat…Until you reach the shore!”
