The accidental multi-millionaire behind Australia’s largest franchise chain tells The Chris Smith Show the secrets to his success.

David ‘Jim’ Penman was $35,000 in debt when he first started Jim’s Mowing, which has evolved into Jim’s Group, with over 50 divisions.

With about 4000 franchisees, Mr Penman tells Chris he only ever expected “maybe 100” franchises.

“I didn’t even think it was going to be the business that I’d stick with, you just rattle along.”

The multi-millionaire completed his PhD after 10 years and admits he went down an unlikely path.

“What do you do with a PhD in history?

“Well, you mow lawns for a living, everybody knows that,” he jokes.
