The biggest political stories of 2017

2017 was undoubtedly a year of twists and turns in Canberra.

Federal political reporter Michael Pachi joins Warren Moore to review the top political stories for 2017.

For Michael, this year’s biggest political story was the dual citizenship saga.

“The dual citizenship saga seemed to come out of nowhere. Some obscure lawyer in Western Australia discovered some politicians could have been in breach of the constitution.

“Then the dominos started falling.”

Michael says the fact the dual citizenship saga hasn’t been resolved yet is a concern.

“I think Parliament should have sat a little longer this year and decided who was going to be referred to the High Court in 2018. This issue is still going to be swirling around next year.”

Another major political moment for 2017 was the passing of same-sex marriage.

“Same-sex marriage was an interesting issue for 2017. When you think about how much it took to get to the final result, the postal ballot, the cost…eventually they got there.”
