Telecommunications Ombudsman asks government to appoint separate social media official

Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman (TIO), Cynthia Gebert, is asking the Federal Government to set up a Digital Platforms Ombudsman (DPO).

The DPO will be a dedicated independent umpire to help people when they are having issues with social media scams, hacking and account lock outs.

Cynthia made a submission to Treasury in late February 2023 to take on the role of the DPO.

“If we’re looking to build confidence in these digital platforms, they need to have both good internal processes but also that independent umpire,” Cynthia told Deborah Knight.

“There is a lot of work being done to look at legislations that will support effective consumer protections.”
