A federal MP is pushing to make telephone companies liable if people die in natural disasters due to poor phone signal.

Member for Berowra Julian Leeser’s private member’s bill would see telcos fined and held responsible for deaths that could have been prevented during natural disasters after fire station phone lines failed during the summer bushfires.

Mr Leeser told Ben Fordham phone signal is crucial in life-threatening situations.

“The telcos have got to stop having a lend of the Australian people.”
