Sydney has a serious theatre shortage

Michael McLaren

Sydney’s lack of theatre space is causing big-ticket productions to skip the city and is costing millions in potential revenue.

Despite Sydney being a desirable location for major productions, the city is losing out to Melbourne and even overseas locations such as Singapore due to a shortage of theatre space.

Theatre producer Michael Cassel who is responsible for hits like Hamilton and Harry Potter, expressed his frustration with the limited venues available for shows like “& Juliet,” which has decided to bypass Sydney altogether.

Michael told Deborah Knight that “Sydney certainly is the logjam that’s making it a challenge for all producers to be able to line up their tours consecutively”.
