Sydney CBD could be turning off its parking metres

Article image for Sydney CBD could be turning off its parking metres

There’s a push to turn off parking meters in the city after dark.

Some Inner West councils have already started turning off parking meters from 7pm.

City of Sydney Councillor Christine Forster is asking the City of Sydney Council to forgo a small portion of its $4-million parking meter revenue each year to allow small and local businesses to thrive.

Some of the proposed streets include Crown and Oxford streets in Sydney’s CBD, as well as certain streets in Pyrmont.

Ms Forster says businesses in these areas “are heavily reliant on having people able to have people pull out the front of their shops”.

She hopes the push will “revitalise the late night economy” and “give some support to some small businesses and local business that have been really struggling.”
