A search is underway for a swimmer who went missing near Tathra, on the far south coast of NSW, last night.

Emergency services were called to Gillards Beach at about 5.30pm yesterday.

Witnesses told police a 42-year-old Victorian man went for a run and swim earlier, but never returned.

His clothes and personal belongings were found on the beach.

Local police, the Marine Area Command, the police helicopter, NSW Ambulance, Surf Rescue NSW and the SES all commenced a large-scale search.

It had to be suspended last night but has resumed this morning.
