Surfing legend Mick Fanning announces retirement at 36

Ben Fordham

The three-time world surfing champion from Penrith will compete in his final event at Bells Beach, the same place he won his first World Tour in 2001.

Fanning announced he will hang up his board for good in posts on his social media accounts on Wednesday night.

He writes, “I still love the game but can’t find the motivation and dedication required to compete for World Titles anymore.”

Speaking with Ben Fordham, he says, “it’s time”.

“I’ve been on tour for 16 years, I just feel like a change of pace is in need.”

He tells Ben he’s been lucky with the response.

“Everyone sort of comes to the same conclusion – as long as you’re happy we’ll support you.

“So, [I’m] very lucky.

“To find something that’s given me so much is just truly incredible.”
