In 2020, as the world was going into lockdown, Sophie Matterson set off on a year-long journey crossing 5000kms of Australian desert from Shark Bay, WA to Byron Beach with her five trusty camels.

Across thirteen months, she traversed arid sweeping deserts and weathered storms under the shelter of a flapping tarp.

Sophie survived life-and-death situations without seeing another soul for weeks and somehow managed to fall in love in the middle of the outback.

“In our busy world, I think it’s very rare that we get chances to be alone in nature. And I got to have that feeling of being just absolutely on my own with my animals,” Sophie told Deborah Knight.
