Small NSW community raises $1 million to save local pub

Ben Fordham

$1 million was raised when six locals got together to save their local pub.

The community of Grong Grong in southern NSW got together to buy The Royal Hotel, built in 1875, when it was put up for sale in the middle of the pandemic.

Cain Gawne told Ben Fordham about 115 people invested.

“We really want to turn this into a destination.”

The town is holding a Yabby Mania event on Australia Day, to race the crustacean.
