‘She looks forward’: Shadow Treasurer hits back at Price criticism

Shadow Treasurer Angus Taylor leapt to the defence of Senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price after claims of “betrayal” by Indigenous Australians Minister Linda Burney

“She’s a brave Indigenous woman, as Peter Dutton said this morning, she looks forward not back,” he said.

Taylor’s defence comes after Price made controversial comments about the ongoing negative impacts on Indigenous Australians, which sparked a fierce response from Burney.

“Those comments are offensive. It denies the experience of so many First Nations families,” Burney said.

Price, who was speaking at the National Press Club, suggested that at this time, “There are no ongoing negative impacts of colonisation.”

“I’ll be honest with you, I do not think so. A positive impact, absolutely. I mean, now we have running water, and readily available food,” she said.

“If we keep telling Aboriginal people that they are victims, we are effectively removing their agency and giving them the expectation that someone else is responsible for their lives. That is the worst possible thing you can do to any human being, to tell them that they are a victim without agency. And that is what I refuse to do. No, there is no ongoing negative impacts of colonisation.”
