2022 Senior Australian of the Year Val Dempsey says the healthcare of older Australians would benefit from an overhaul to the pension system.

Currently, pensioners working more than the restricted hours set out by the government may lose 50 cents on every dollar.

Val was named 2022 Senior Australian of the Year for her tireless commitment to emergency first aid training.

She told Ben Fordham a change to the system would be beneficial for pensioners.

“Being able to contribute to the community, and being reimbursed financially for this, adds only to mental health wellbeing and to their general health.”
