Western Australia is set to become the second state to legalise voluntary euthanasia after the bill passed the Upper House of Parliament.

The controversial voluntary assisted dying bill is expected to become law by Christmas.

Voluntary euthanasia was first legalised in Victoria in June this year.

Rita Panahi tells Deborah Knight she used to be supportive of euthanasia but now feels differently.

“The argument is that once you cross that line, once you allow the state to put people to death, then those guidelines can be relaxed and relaxed and relaxed.

“I think this is something that is a matter of conscience.

“It is something I’ve changed my mind on but I think I’m in the minority with this one.”
