Parents are not allowed to smack their children in Scotland after it was legislated as a criminal offence.

The bill has removed the defence of “justifiable assault”, making it to the first country in the UK to ban the physical punishment of children.

Child psychologist Dr Michael Carr-Gregg tells Karl Stefanovic this ban has been tried and failed in other countries.

“I’m not a fan of smacking.

“However, these bans don’t work.

“If a law is to work it has to have popular support, it has to be enforceable and I don’t think that either of those two criteria are met by this particular move.”
