Russian and Belarusian tennis players banned from competing in Wimbledon

Clinton Maynard

World No.2 tennis player Daniil Medvedev will not be able to play at Wimbledon this year after organisers banned all Russian and Belarusian players from the 2022 tournament.

The decision was backed by the British government and Wimbledon is the first grand slam to exclude Russian and Belarusian players from competing under a neutral flag.

Hence, the ban means Medvedev is prevented from playing in the competition completely.

Questions have arisen as issuing an ultimatum to a tennis player to denounce an autocrat knowing he and his family may suffer is being considered ‘unfair’.

2GB Tennis Correspondent Craig Gabriel told Jim Wilson the decision might see the ATP not allow ranking points.

“That could have a negative impact.”
