A south-western Sydney rugby league club has been forced to fold after 65 years because a sponsor has failed to pay up.

The Auburn Warriors struck a $100,000 deal with former deputy mayor Salim Mehajer’s company, Mehajer Brothers, but they never saw the funds.

The Warriors are now unable to pay players for last season and can’t afford to field a team this year.

Norm Nicholas volunteers for the club and tells Ben Fordham more.

“It is very disappointing, especially for the players, the families, the supporters. But what can you do?

“Unfortunately with sports sponsorship, it’s very tough. It’s very difficult to find a sponsor now. We’re running out of time.

“We are sorry and we are hurt and it’s unfortunate for the people of Auburn.”
