The famous opera Carmen is coming to Cockatoo Island for three weeks this summer – with a rock ‘n’ roll twist.

Running from November 25 until December 18, the opera is the first of its kind to be performed on the island.

Director Liesel Badorrek told Deborah Knight there will be motorbikes performing stunts, complete with fireworks.

“I don’t think we could do it in the Opera House, it wouldn’t work in that space … but you can on Cockatoo Island.

“We have very strict curfews on sound and on lights.”
