Rice jobs cut amid crippling drought

SunRice has announced it will retrench 100 workers at its mills in the NSW Riverina next year amid dwindling rice crops.

They have commissioned a report into the Murray-Darling Basin Plan and are calling for a review.

The report found that far more water had been allowed to travel to South Australia and into the sea than intended.

SunRice CEO Rob Gordon tells Ross Greenwood they thrive off half a million tonnes produced annually but this year is different.

“The crop that we harvested this year was 54,000 and we know now the rice that’s planted will be smaller again.

“So less than 10 per cent of what we actually need for a viable industry in the Riverina.”
