Residents in Sydney’s west have been given the green light to leave their homes after a 500-metre powerline earlier fell onto properties.

Emergency crews are still working to clear the fallen line in Plumpton and re-tension the wire over the M7 near Woodstock Avenue.

It’s not yet known what caused the line to fall but power to homes in the area has not been affected.

It’s understood the line automatically shut off when it hit the ground around 7am, but authorities didn’t want residents being put at risk, warning them to stay indoors.

A reduced speed limit remains in place for motorists on the M7 as Endeavour Energy crews work to resolve the issue.

Resident Russ Gazitepe had the wire come down on his carpool this morning.

He tells Ben Fordham he “woke up to a big bang”.
