The Socceroos have qualified for their 5th consecutive FIFA World Cup after beating Peru on penalties in their intercontinental playoff this morning.

After reaching 120 minutes played and at a stalemate of 0-0, Australia defeated Peru on penalities 5-4.

Australia will meet the defending champions France in their opening match of Group D of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar on November 22.

Socceroo Awer Mabil described his crucial goal in the penalty shoot-out against Peru as a personal ‘thank you’ to the country.

Mabil lived in a Kenyan refugee camp until he was 11, before his family relocated to Australia.

Former Socceroos player Craig Foster told Mark Levy it’s a wonderful success story.

“The Socceroos should reflect the face of the nation.”
