A powerful earthquake has hit Japan’s northern island of Hokkaido, collapsing walls and some buildings.

Fortunately, it didn’t trigger a tsunami.

The quake, which struck just after 3am local time on Wednesday had a magnitude of 6.7.

Listener and Australian farrier Matt Schumacher lives in northern Japan.

He’s sent Ray the below photos of the Japan earthquake from Hokkaido.

He tells Ray he was in bed when it struck.

“It more or less shook me out of bed.”

“I’ve gone to go down the stairs and I went to take a step and the house disappeared from underneath me.

“It lifted the house and dropped it and as I took a step, the steps gone.”

He says the entire island of Hokkaido, similar in size to Tasmania, is without power.
