Police Commissioner reveals link to heroic officer
Police Commissioner Mick Fuller has revealed his special link to one of two officers who rescued a man from a burning home in Sydney’s inner-west this morning.
Two police officers, Probationary Constable Claudia Vaccaro and Constable Oliver Rietbergen, were patrolling Camperdown early this morning when they saw smoke billowing from a townhouse.
They raced to the scene and woke the resident, saving his life.
The two heroic officers were later sedated in hospital because they’d breathed in too much smoke.
Commissioner Fuller has applauded their actions, revealing to Ben Fordham his personal connection to Constable Rietbergen.
“I talked his parents into letting me to talk him into joining the police force about 18 months ago.
“He’s turned out to be a great recruit for us.”
Mr Fuller has also given an update on their condition.
“Thankfully this afternoon both officers are awake. They’re fully aware of the situation.”
