Woman & girls the most affected by the Turkey-Syria Earthquake

Mike Jeffreys

Luke speaks with Sabine Abiaad, Regional communication lead with international aid organisation ActionAid in the Arab region, who is Beirut Lebanon co-ordinating the ActionAid relief effort following the Turkey-Syria Earthquake.

Both in Turkey and Syria many of those affected have already been displaced due to the Syrian Civil War so this is heaping trauma on top of trauma.  And of course conditions are freezing on the ground.

Ms Abiaad is also concerned about women and girls being vulnerable to violence and sexual assault as it is a crisis situation with little law and order.

ActionAid has been distributing clothes, food, and temporary shelters in Syria where most of ActionAid’s infrastructure is – but there is a key road crossing into Syria which has been damaged by the earthquake which is slowing things down.

Should Australians wish to donate to those affected by the earthquake they can through the ActionAid Australia link below…
