SpaceX launch has reignited questions about the reality of deep space travel in our lifetime. What are the opportunities and what is holding us back?

Jonathan Nally tells John Stanley that space travel has always been the domain of government in much the same way as earth exploration was. It was always driven by commerce first but now, if there’s a dollar to be made, private companies will get involved.

At its peak in 1965, the US government was spending huge amounts of money on the space race but over time, governments changed and so did their priorities.

Now the US has to try and keep China out of space….
