What our COVID response can learn from equine influenza

When equine influenza struck in 2007, about 50 thousand horses were affected across 6 thousand properties, resulting in restrictions, lockdowns and improved hygiene. Dr. Mark Schembri is an equine veterinarian and a GP at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. He says the COVID vaccine alone won’t be enough, and restrictive measures must remain in place until the immunological response to the vaccine takes place. Taking his lead from our EI response, Dr. Schembri also said tighter restrictions must be in place to prevent overseas people bringing the virus to Australian shores.
