What is it with numeric number plates – See Lawson’s auction Tuesday April 9

Motor Torque

In recent years the collectivity of numeral only number plates has gone through the roof. Regular auctions have shown a consistent rise in values, and they make a fine investment. Witness the N.S.W. number plate 1 which recently sold for $11.5 million. With Shannon’s leaving the auction arena the responsibility for Transport of N.S.W. historic plate auctions has been vested in Lawson Auctioneers. Specialist Martin Kass tells me Lawsons will offer 15 numeric number plates in its Classic Plate on-line auction this Tuesday April 9. There’s a mix of three, four and five-digit plates on offer – number 1114 has an interesting history originally fixed to a red Chevrolet given to batsman Don Bradman when he returned home from the triumphant Ashes Series of 1930. I won’t be surprised if a cricket tragic bids well above the posted estimate of $150,000 to $200,000.
