Toyota’s rally-bred GR Yaris pocket rocket hatch sells up a storm in a little over a week.

David Berthon

Light cars under $25,000 have suffered the most in the pandemic– Toyota’s Yaris the segment leader despite a sales drop of 42 per cent. But proving that with the right car sales follow Toyota has had remarkable success with its red hot rally-bred GR Yaris hatch all but selling the first 1000 units in a little over a week with an introductory on-line price of $39,950 drive-away. Unrelated to the new Yaris four-door hatch apart from sharing the Yaris badge the two-door GR pocket rocket with alloy doors, bonnet and rear hatch and carbon fibre roof is feather light and has a larger footprint – the potent 200kW three-cylinder turbo driving all four-wheels through a six-speed manual – the rear suspension a sophisticated double wishbone variety. After such instant success with its special introductory offer Toyota are yet to announce if they’ll lift the price on the second batch up to its recommended retail price of $49,500.
